We're coming together as the East Village/Lower East Side part of the citywide HDFC Coalition to tell the truth about our lives and fight back against changes in HDFC policies giving control of our homes to the City and State. These policies are geared only to make the City administration look like defenders of the poor, even as they open large areas of our town to developers and real-estate speculators, and fatten the coffers of paternalistic nonprofits that claim to help the poor, but hate it when the poor dare to help themselves!
The stakes are high. For most of us, our homes are the only assets we have. Many of us are on the verge of retirement, and after decades of hard work, these policies would force us from our neighborhoods and into the poverty HDFCs were meant to prevent. In the East Village/Lower East Side, more than 2,000 of us call HDFC co-ops our home. Ask what you can do. United, we can win!
